Georg Baselitz The Heroes 1965–66
Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Dover Street 37, London, Mayfair
About
An art exhibition devoted to Georg Baselitz's Hero paintings, held at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac's Ely House in London. The German painter created this breakthrough series in 1965 and 1966, when he was just 27, producing around 60 paintings, 130 drawings and 38 prints. The works centre on monumental, ragged and vulnerable figures set in ravaged landscapes, confronting post-war German society rather than offering optimism. The show brings together key works on loan from major collections including Tate, Berlinische Galerie, Museum Frieder Burda and Museum Küppersmühle Duisburg, and is the first exhibition in the UK devoted exclusively to this series.
