About

SURFACE TENSION: BRITISH PAINTING IN THE 1990s is an exhibition at the Ben Brown Fine Arts gallery in London. It examines how a small group of British painters survived and even flourished in '90s Britain, when the art world was dominated by the conceptual hegemony of the YBA movement with figures like Hirst, Emin, Whiteread and Lucas. Working apart, these painters arrived at strikingly common ground: a shared preoccupation with surface, gesture and the physical act of painting, shaped by the cultural pressures and siege mentality of their age.
