Photographers Make Their Own Movies: large-format portraits.
About
An exhibition of large-format analogue portraits made by photography students from ENS Louis-Lumière, shown in the Salons of the Institut français du Royaume-Uni's Language Centre at 13 Cromwell Place, London. Since 1999 the students have photographed image professionals with large-format cameras, black drapes and sheet film, building an archive of over 1,500 portraits of leading figures in photography and cinema over 27 years. Presented for the French Film Festival London, the centenary of ENS Louis-Lumière and the bicentenary of photography, the selection shows portraits that playfully nod to the world of cinema. Using cinematic lighting, posing and framing, the photographers invite viewers to imagine stories, while some subjects turn the session into a performance of its own.
