About

A talk about how sacred spaces of Chinese Religion in Singapore are made and negotiated. Dr Terence Heng, Reader in Sociology at the University of Liverpool, draws on 15 years of visual ethnographic fieldwork and three case studies, including roadside offerings at the Hungry Ghost Festival and Chinese spirit mediums known as Tang-ki. He shows how practitioners' 'spiritual imagination' lets them co-exist with state policy and urban planning, creating what he calls 'sacred flowscapes'. The event is hosted by The Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Centre for Buddhist Art and Conservation.
