Spellbound at The Society of Antiquaries
Society of Antiquaries, Mayfair
About
Spellbound at The Society of Antiquaries is a Halloween event at Burlington House exploring magic, superstition and the occult. Visitors can encounter bellarmine "spirit houses", hexing bottles, books of spells, Renaissance occult philosophy that inspired Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and a physician's notebook with 17th-century recipes, chiromancy and astrology. Artist Sarah Newson leads an unconscious drawing activity and helps participants create protective amulets using worldwide symbols of luck and protection. Geoffrey Munn OBE FSA presents a 16th-century charmstone used for "spirit tapping", and Hear We Here We (Rory Harvey and Cale Donia) offer a soundscape and live performance; the ticket includes a spooky cocktail, all ages are welcome, and tickets are for hourly slots running from 5-8pm.
