About
This is a screening of 'In Search of the Unreturned Soldiers', a pair of television documentaries about Japanese soldiers who stayed in the countries where they were stationed instead of returning home after the war. Shōhei Imamura narrates the films and appears on screen as interviewer, travelling across Southeast Asia in search of these soldiers. He hopes to learn about their choice and the lives they have led since the war ended. The conversations range from the cordial to the probing, touching on the Japanese character, the Emperor, the communist party, and wartime massacres committed by Japanese soldiers across Southeast Asia.
