About
Hill of No Return 18 is a screening of Wang Toon's 1992 Taiwanese film at an independent cinema. The final chapter of Wang Toon's 'Modern Taiwan Trilogy', written by Wu Nien-jen, follows two brothers who leave home in 1927 to work at a Japanese-controlled gold mine, where one marries Ah-Jou (Kuei-Mei Yang) and the other falls for prostitute Fumiko (Mayko Chen). As the Japanese army keeps searching workers for stolen gold, tensions rise. The screening on 13 November will be introduced by Tom Cunliffe (UCL) and shows a new restoration; the film won Best Feature Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the Golden Horse Awards.
