About
A dramatised concert performance of Handel's oratorio Theodora, staged at St Martin-in-the-Fields as part of the church's 300th anniversary celebrations. The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists perform under conductor Christophe Rousset, with a cast including Iestyn Davies as Didymus, Marie Lys as Theodora and Alice Coote as Irene. The work tells of the virtuous Theodora facing persecution as Roman authorities crack down on dissident Christians, while her devoted Didymus must choose between the state and both their souls. Handel regarded it as his favourite among his oratorios, rating it more highly than the Messiah.
