The Reluctant Ethnographer: Using multimodal ethnography to decolonise the figure of the child

SOAS University of London, Bloomsbury

About

A seminar at SOAS titled "The Reluctant Ethnographer: Using multimodal ethnography to decolonise the figure of the child". In it, Brenda discusses her 18-month multimodal ethnography with children who had experienced domestic abuse and social work intervention in an inner London borough. She reflects on the ethical and methodological challenges of the research, including tensions between her identities as a practitioner and researcher. She also shows how such a methodology can decolonise research with children marginalised through racism, poverty, ableism and insecure immigration status, challenging the colonial trope of the passive and damaged child.
