About
Viola Day is a concert series whose finale is an evening celebrating the viola and the breadth of its repertoire. Violist Timothy Ridout, the hall's Associate Artist, leads six violists – Hélène Clément, Ting-Ru Lai, Matthew Lipman, Eivind Ringstad and Georgy Kovalev – joined by pianist James Baillieu and harpsichordist George Herbert. The programme spans Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in a version for five violas, George Benjamin's Viola, Viola, York Bowen's rarely performed Fantasie Quartet for four violas, and Frank Bridge's Lament, first performed at this hall with Lionel Tertis in 1912. It closes with Benjamin Dale's Introduction and Andante for six violas, written for Tertis and his Royal Academy of Music class.
