Alison Knowles: by Alison Knowles: A Retrospective (1960–2022)
Grey Art Museum, Cooper Square 18, Manhattan
About
"by Alison Knowles: A Retrospective (1960–2022)" is the first comprehensive survey of the American artist Alison Knowles (1933–2025), whose career spanned more than six decades. Knowles, based in New York with studios in Chelsea and SoHo, was a founding member of Fluxus, the international community of experimental artists formed in the early 1960s, and the exhibition refocuses attention on her pioneering individual production. Her work invites audiences to explore daily life through simple actions engaging sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch, combining visual art, musical scores, and live performance across genres—a practice her husband and collaborator Dick Higgins termed "intermedia" in 1966. More than two hundred objects are shown, from painting and mixed-media prints to event scores, sculpture, sound work, and artist's books.
