Image and Gesture
Gladstone Gallery, West 21st Street 530, 10011 New York, Manhattan
About
"Image and Gesture" is an exhibition of work by Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008), an influential American artist and pioneer of Pop Art and Conceptual Art. It highlights the interplay between photographic imagery and gestural painting, from his newspaper-based "Transfer Drawings" and "Silkscreen Paintings" to later series such as "Borealis", "Night Shade", "Waterworks" and "Anagram", and also covers his performative collaborations with figures like John Cage and Niki de Saint Phalle. Curated by Florian Steininger and presented in collaboration with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, the retrospective marks the European conclusion of an international series marking the artist's 100th birthday.
