About

Kikuo Saito: Alphabet Paintings is an exhibition at James Fuentes Gallery presenting a major series of abstract paintings. It introduces the Alphabet Paintings, works on gridded canvases stenciled with random Latin letters that the Tokyo-born artist Kikuo Saito (1939–2016) produced from the 1990s to the 2010s. After moving to New York in 1966, Saito worked in both visual art and theater, assisting Color Field painters and bringing improvisation and chance from the stage into his art. The series explores color, form, and vision, treating letters not as messages to read but as a new world to live with and transform.
