About
Common Sense is a group exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum that puts America's past in dialogue with its present. It pairs Thomas Paine's foundational writings, Common Sense and The American Crisis, with nine contemporary works by artists including Paul Ramírez Jonas, Charles Gaines, Jason Kao Hwang, Öyvind Fahlström, Joyce Kossloff, Hank Willis Thomas, Kara Walker, Donald Moffett, and Maynard Monrow. Donald Moffett contributes a newly commissioned text-based work using graphic design strategies to deliver the message that power lies with us. As 250 years ago, the country navigates deep division, and the exhibition presents contemporary art as offering hope, inspiration, and momentum.
