About

Todd Haynes's 2002 film stars Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid as a well-heeled Connecticut couple whose seemingly perfect suburban existence is upended when he is discovered trawling Hartford's gay bars and she strikes up an affair with her new Black gardener, played by Dennis Haysbert. It is an homage to the Eisenhower era melodramas of Douglas Sirk that reworks the materials of his 1955 All That Heaven Allows to explore sexual and social transgression verboten in the Hollywood of Sirk's time. The film features a period-appropriate score by Elmer Bernstein and an approximation of Technicolor saturation by cinematographer Ed Lachman.

Critics

8.0Very good

Critics praise the performances, the evocative use of colour and period style, and a script that thoughtfully probes prejudice. Detractors find the homage to 1950s melodrama imitative, thin and campy rather than substantive.
