About

Hanna Hur's 'Annunciation' is a solo exhibition of paintings and a drawing at the Greene Naftali gallery in New York, presented on the 8th floor and running through October 31, 2026. The Los Angeles-based painter Hanna Hur is known for a 'rational mysticism,' asking where images come from and treating repetitive gesture as a petitioning of the gods for the image to come near. Each new work begins with a layer of thinned black paint, over which a rectilinear grid is plotted, coupling the biomorphic and geometric modes that abstraction tends to cleave apart. A pair of works silhouettes an absent Madonna drawn from Antonello da Messina's fifteenth-century 'Virgin Annunciate,' evoking the moment when the divine is proximate to the human world.
