Homes for People, Not for Profit
Printed Matter, Inc., West 11th Street 231, Manhattan
About
A window installation at Printed Matter featuring painted stencils on the store's window, which visitors can watch being made and add to on a collective banner and newsprint posters. It is created by Art Against Displacement, artist Alex Strada, and FEC Tenants Against Demolition, and reactivates Homeless At Home, a 1985–86 project in which artists and architects designed stencils speaking to the public about human dignity and home for everyone. The installation responds to the proximity of NYCHA's Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Houses, which face demolition under a $1.2 billion plan with private developers. During its run, a supply drive collects winter accessories and hygiene supplies for unhoused community members, and a zine and related publications are displayed.
