About

Ivan is a 1932 film directed by Oleksandr Dovzhenko, his first sound film. It is a melic ode to the construction of the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station and the men and women conscripted into its accomplishment, among them the eponymous Ukrainian villager. In it Dovzhenko created a rich sonic tapestry, proving himself an innovator in the aural as much as the visual realm. As influential as Earth before it on the Ukrainian poetic cinema of the 1960s, it is an achievement of towering stature.
