About
Poem of the Sea is a 1958 film directed by Yulia Solntseva, based on a script left behind by Dovzhenko at his death and filmed by his widow, who aimed to work wholly in accordance with his artistic conception. It deals with the construction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant and its impact on the surrounding countryside, in particular one soon-to-be-submerged village, birthplace of General Fedorchenko (Boris Livanov), whose arrival for a visit in its final days stirs long-dormant memories. The film is 105 minutes long.

Critics
7.5Very good
Critics praise the film's striking poetic imagery, the seamless braiding of realism and fantasy, and Solntseva's vivid visual eye in fulfilling Dovzhenko's conception. They fault little, though its rarity and lack of a strong standalone assessment are noted.
