About

Aerograd is a 1935 feature film directed by Oleksandr Dovzhenko. Set in the Soviet Far East in the not-too-distant future, it takes its title from a fictitious Siberian city that, home to a strategically vital airfield, is targeted for conquest by the duplicitous forces of the Japanese Empire. Shot by cinematographer Eduard Tissé, it shows the forces of the Revolution contending with samurai saboteurs, counterrevolutionary kulaks and "Old Believer" Christians, pushing Soviet civilization into the wilds of the Pacific coast. Part spy thriller, part full-throated agitprop, and part pantheistic bliss-out.
