About

A film screening of Mastergame (Mesterjátszma) followed by a conversation with producer János Szurmay. Directed by Barnabás Tóth, this 2023 historical drama is a modernized adaptation of Stefan Zweig's The Royal Game, set during the Soviet suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. As Soviet tanks flood Budapest, a young couple tries to flee aboard the last refugee train, while a tortured Catholic priest preserves his sanity by playing chess against himself with pieces made of bread. The storylines converge on the train, where a nerve-racking chess match decides far more than the fate of sacred treasures.

Critics

The critic praises the film's striking visuals, inventive use of its train setting, genre blending and compact 90-minute runtime. Little is faulted, though its familiar references and tonal shifts are hinted at.
