About

Recap1956: Through the Lens of John Sadovy is a photo exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. It shows images from the private collection of the John Sadovy Estate, taken by the freelance photojournalist who covered the revolution on assignment for Life magazine. Over four days in Budapest and near the Hungarian-Austrian border, Sadovy created more than 600 photographs, including freedom fighters, damaged Budapest streets, Cardinal Mindszenty after his release, and refugees crossing into Austria. His work, published in Life and honored with the 1957 Robert Capa Gold Medal, records both the hope of liberation and the violence of the uprising.
