About

The Hairy Ape is a stage play running at the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage. Eugene O'Neill wrote it, and Ciarán O'Reilly directs a cast including Jon Beavers, Elizabeth Teeter and Richard Hollis. It follows Yank, a brutish head coal stoker on an ocean liner who, after being repulsed by the ship owner's daughter, blunders violently through Manhattan seeking revenge and belonging. First staged in 1922, the expressionist work is widely regarded as one of O'Neill's greatest achievements, and it runs one hour and thirty minutes without intermission.
