About
The special exhibition "Avant-Garde – Graphic Design on the Verge of a Breakthrough" at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich looks back at graphic design between the world wars, when Constructivism, New Typography and photography defined its visual language. It shows posters, collages and magazines by El Lissitzky, Valentina Kulagina, Adolphe Mouron Cassandre, Jan Tschichold, Lucia Moholy and Binia Bill, among others. A reduced approach of colours and forms replaced the previous subjective-artistic styles and painterly narratives. The exhibition also highlights parallel trends in architecture, product design, theatre and film, capturing a brief, intense era that still influences graphic design today.
