About
«Landscape Suicide» is a 1986 film by James Benning, presented here as part of its screening programme. The cool, unsettling film juxtaposes two real murder cases: the 1984 killing by Californian Bernadette Protti and Ed Gein's mass murders in rural Wisconsin in the 1950s. Re-enacted interrogation transcripts featuring remarkable actors alternate with images of landscapes that are interrogated like witnesses to the bloody deeds. The visual poet Benning demands that viewers look at these real crime scenes, listen to them, and fill in the gaps themselves.
