About

Translating the Rural is an exhibition on wooden churches, open-air museums and modern architecture in interwar East-Central Europe. It is curated by Radu Remus Macovei and gta Ausstellungen at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture at ETH Zurich. The show presents findings from Macovei's doctoral thesis „Moving Churches, Making Nations“ and the design research project „Ligneous Worlds“. At its core are three wooden churches moved from mountain villages to Prague, Bucharest and Lviv, together with three 1:5 scale wooden models exploring how the buildings might have evolved.
