About

A lecture in English as part of the Dahlem Humanities Center Lectures at Freie Universität Berlin. Marian Feldman of Johns Hopkins University examines how the rulers of the Third Dynasty of Ur shaped the memory of the Akkadian state. She shows that Ur-Namma and Shulgi destroyed older sacred buildings and built new ziggurat precincts on freshly excavated foundations, while also collecting and displaying statues of Akkadian rulers. Through this selective forgetting and remembering they secured their own place in Mesopotamian history and shaped the legacy of Akkad to this day.
