About
A seminar workshop with an introductory guided tour and a visit to the archive, marking 35 years since the Stasi Records Act was passed. It is organized by the Federal Archives' Stasi Records Archive in Berlin-Lichtenberg in cooperation with the Margarete Steffin Adult Education Centre in Berlin-Lichtenberg and forms part of the Berlin Freedom Week. Using press reports and publications by authorities and the Bundestag, participants retrace the historical steps and arguments behind the act, which is considered a worldwide model for handling the records of a secret police. An introduction to how the files can be accessed and background on the 1991 Bundestag debate, in which a parliament decided for the first time on access to a secret police's records, round off the event.
