About
'Die Seherin' (The Seer) is a theatre piece by Milo Rau, performed on German and Arabic with German surtitles. Ursina Lardi plays a war photographer who travels the world's crisis zones in search of subjects of horror, apparently invulnerable and always one step ahead of suffering – until she experiences in her own body what violence means. The piece is based on the life stories of war photographers, Iraqi citizens and Rau's own experiences, such as his encounter with the teacher Azad Hassan in Mosul, whose hand was cut off as punishment during the occupation by the Islamic State. Inspired by Sophocles' figure Philoctetes, it asks why violence is so seductive, what it means to bear witness, and whether art can ease suffering.
