„Ein Kapitel für sich“ is a three-part television adaptation of Walter Kempowski's autobiographical novel from 1975. It was directed by Eberhard Fechner, who brought Kempowski's experiences in camps and prisons in the Soviet occupation zone and the early GDR compellingly to the screen. Critics partly attacked the film as anti-communist agitation, while audiences responded enthusiastically to its first broadcast on ZDF around 1979/1980. It was Fechner's last feature film project, shown as part of a retrospective marking his 100th birthday.
