About
„Eisenhans“ is a feature film by Tankred Dorst about Schroth, a lorry driver of beer living close to the inner-German border with his wife, for whom he has no love left, and his intellectually impaired daughter Marga, whom he claims to love but physically pressures. He shuts himself in with Marga in a little house and dares to dance with her in the beer tent, ignoring the mockery and suspicion of others. Dorst, a playwright, understood the film as a „böses Märchen“ about bodies and dreams that find their way through the dreary reality of the province – angels in an enchanted forest and foreign worlds suddenly appearing in colour on television. It was one of the most unusual cinema debuts of the 1980s, premiered in 1983 in the Quinzaine in Cannes, and Gerhard Olschewski and Susanne Lothar won the German Film Prize for their performances.
