About
Kerstin Ehmer reads from her book "Heldinnen der Meere: Sechzehn Frauen und ihr Leben für die Ozeane" and then discusses it with the audience. The oceans cover most of our planet, yet the history of their exploration has long been told mainly by men. Ehmer puts 16 courageous, pioneering women at the centre who devoted their lives to protecting, researching and saving the world's seas – among them well-known names such as Virginia Woolf and Elisabeth Mann Borgese as well as Marie Tharp, who drew the first precise maps of the ocean floor. The author studied theatre and film studies, American studies and philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin, trained as a photographer at the Lette-Verein, opened Berlin's Victoria Bar together with her husband in 2001 and is the author of novels and non-fiction books.
