Matthias Schmelzer: The Spectre of Stagnation and the Rise of Fascism. Towards a Theory of Growth
ICI Berlin, Christinenstraße 18-19, 10119 Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg
About
A lecture in English on how stagnation and growth relate to the rise of far-right and fascist tendencies. Economic historian Matthias Schmelzer, Professor of Social-Ecological Transformation Research at the University of Flensburg, examines why economic contraction is so often cited as a cause of the far right. He develops a framework for a theory of growth across ideological, social and material dimensions, contrasting degrowth's deliberate, democratically negotiated reduction with the autoreduction of disaster capitalism. The talk is part of the AutoReduction Lecture Series, a public livestream is available, and registration is required to attend in person.
