Beyond categories: intimacy, agency, and identity in Taiwan

SOAS University of London, Bloomsbury

About

An online seminar about intimacy, agency, and identity in contemporary Taiwan, held at SOAS University of London. Hoi Yan Yau, an anthropologist at National Taiwan Normal University, presents her book 'Sex, Culture, and Identity in Taiwan', a person-centred ethnographic study of how individuals negotiate gender, sexuality, kinship, and identity. Through life stories, it examines how social structures such as patrilineal kinship and gender norms shape people's possibilities without fully determining their actions, arguing that agency is best understood as navigation within constraint.
