Talks and readings
Colonial Paris: talk on the Caribbean's mark on French art.
About
This is a one-hour talk on how France's colonial empire, especially the Caribbean colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), shaped the eighteenth-century Paris art world. It is given by Dr Hannah Williams, Reader in the History of Art at Queen Mary University of London and co-director of the research project Colonial Networks. The talk explores how colonial trade, wealth, and power intersected with the making, circulation, and collecting of art, and how the French and Haitian Revolutions brought some works to London. It can be attended in person in the museum's Theatre, with no ticket required, or watched live online via Zoom with a free booked ticket.
