About
"Arcadia" is a multi-screen film installation about a global migration of people, nature and disease. It is by John Akomfrah, a widely respected artist and filmmaker known for works exploring memory, post-colonialism and the experiences of migrant diasporas. The installation shows the mass movement of plants, people, animals, metals, diseases and ideas between the Americas, Afro-Eurasia and Europe from the 1400s onwards, known as the Columbian Exchange. Across five screens, imagery of deserts, ice fields, mountains and seas is set to a soundtrack of nature sounds, opera and poetry, asking how migration, colonialism and empire have shaped the planet and its legacies today.
