About

A talk in which the tabla player Shahbaz Hussain explains how three legendary gurus shaped his playing. Hussain began learning tabla at five from his father, the vocalist Ustad Mumtaz Hussain, and was later taught by Ustad Faiyaz Khan of the Delhi gharana, Ustad Shaukat Hussain Khan of the Punjab gharana and Ustad Allah Rakha. He speaks about what a gharana is, how rhythm operates in Hindustani music, and why different schools produce different sounds, drawing on three decades of performance and teaching. The hour-long talk is followed by a 30-minute audience Q&A.
