Fauré: Requiem by Candlelight
St Mary le Strand, Strand, WC2R 1ES London, Covent Garden
About
A candlelit choral concert pairing Gabriel Fauré's ethereal and uplifting Requiem Op.48 with Herbert Howells' powerful and intensely personal Requiem, lasting about 70 minutes without interval. It is performed by the L'Inviti Singers, a handpicked choir drawn from singers of top chamber choirs, with organist Alexander Pott and directed by David Guest. Fauré wrote his Requiem not in memory of a specific person but, in his words, "for the pleasure of it," while Howells composed his a few years before his son's death in 1935 and later associated the work with his memory. The setting is St Mary le Strand, James Gibbs' baroque masterpiece and arguably the most beautiful of the Queen Anne Churches.
