About

'How We Lost America' is an exhibition exploring the dawn of American Independence through a British lens. It is presented by Aurora Metro Arts & Media with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and uncovers hidden histories of female revolutionaries, enslaved soldiers who fought for their liberty, and a radical arsonist who bombed Portsmouth Harbour. Through satire, newspapers and letters of the time, it shows how ideas of liberty and equality set a democratic precedent for the world. The exhibition tours to Hogarth's House and other venues until spring 2027, accompanied by talks by academics and readings of Howard Ginsberg's play Jefferson & Adams.
