Intentions of Murder
Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London, Covent Garden
About
Intentions of Murder is a screening of Shōhei Imamura's 1964 film about Sadako, a young housewife bullied by her mother-in-law and philandering husband, whose life is violently upended when a home invader assaults her and later returns to profess his love. The film slips between dreams, memories and misremembrances as her family treats her like a slave and her days unfold in gruelling detail. Imamura lays bare the contradictions of Japan's rapid industrialization, showing how the drive towards modernity is undermined by violent desires and primal superstitions. Brutal and beautiful, it builds to an apogee of his work in his first decade.

Critics
Critics praise the film as one of the director's most rewarding and thematically complete works, richly consolidating his early themes. The main fault cited is an excessive running time that makes it feel overlong.
