Jazz Dance in British Culture
St. Margaret's House, Old Ford Road 15-23, E2 9PJ London, Bethnal Green
About
An exhibition exploring how African Diasporic Jazz dance has shaped British culture from the 18th century to the present day, from the Cakewalk to UK Jazz. It is presented by the Jazz Dance Collective, an educational hub for Tap Dance, Authentic Jazz and UK Jazz, as part of Black History Month. The show traces jazz dance's journey from early tap rhythms through the Foxtrot, Charleston and Lindy Hop to Rock 'n' Roll, Motown and today's street dance, highlighting pioneers such as Billy Waters, Josephine Baker and Buddy Bradley. It is the first exhibition of its kind in Britain to place dance, rather than music, at the centre of the story, and is shown at The Gallery Cafe.
