Royal Academy Opera - Dress Rehearsal of Richard Strauss' Capriccio
About
A dress rehearsal of Richard Strauss' opera Capriccio, staged by the Royal Academy of Music, opened by a talk for members of the British-German Association. Dr Christopher White, Head of Royal Academy Opera, introduces the opera and its place in the German cultural story before the rehearsal begins. Capriccio, Strauss' final opera, was completed in August 1941 and looks back to eighteenth-century debates over the primacy of music over text in musical theatre. Director Olivia Fuchs aims to present the work in its ravishing beauty while acknowledging the problematic escapism inherent in its form.
