About

"Shut the Gate Against My Thoughts" is a one-hour concert of songs for voice and theorbo tracing the musical expression of melancholy in 16th- and 17th-century Europe, with works by composers including John Dowland, Francesca Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi and Barbara Strozzi. It is performed by soprano Nardus Williams, winner of the Rising Star award at the 2022 International Opera Awards, with Liz Kenny, one of Europe's leading lute and theorbo specialists, as part of the London Festival of Baroque Music. The programme explores the many shades of melancholy—introspective, romantic, forlorn and deeply expressive—lifting moments of profound lament with flashes of wit and light.
