About
A lecture on the medieval portals of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris and what researchers have learned from studying them since the 2019 fire. It is the annual Paul Crossley Memorial Lecture at The Courtauld, given by Professor Stephan Albrecht of the University of Bamberg. He presents findings from the scientific construction site set up after the fire, where the University of Bamberg's team examined the three west portals and the two transept façades using 3D photogrammetric surveying alongside laser scanning of the whole cathedral. The lecture shows how this new three-dimensional data, with analysis of stone surfaces and stylistic questions, leads to a fresh interpretation of the cathedral's building history and its medieval construction site.
