About
A film screening followed by a discussion about how communities come together to imagine and build alternative futures in response to the housing crisis. The film, Tomorrow is Built Today, tells the story of Nubia Way in Downham, Lewisham, built in the 1990s by Fusions Jameen, London's first black housing co-operative, using Walter Segal's principles and self-builders who received long-term discounted rents in return for constructing their homes. Through interviews with the original self-builders, historians, architects and economists, this new documentary from the Architecture Foundation celebrates the legacy of Nubia Way and examines self-building as an act of resistance against housing discrimination faced by Black British communities. Afterwards, original self-builder Tim Oshodi joins artist Abel Holsborough to discuss connections between Nubia Way and House for Artists, a Barking-based artist residential project, reflecting on how housing can support creativity, collective care and shared ways of living; the event also includes a private view of Earthly Paradise: Radical Living in the UK.
