About
Alex Da Corte: Hot Dog with Ketchup is a large public artwork shown on a building facade on Gansevoort Street, across from the Whitney Museum and the High Line. The Venezuelan American artist Alex Da Corte, who lives and works in Philadelphia, based it on a printout of Roy Lichtenstein's 1963 painting Hot Dog, painting ketchup across its surface in a loose, bodily sweep. The gesture brings Pop's cool commercial image into contact with the heroic mark of Abstract Expressionism, and was made partially in response to the hot dog vendors across the street. The billboard was created in conjunction with the exhibition Roy Lichtenstein: Like New, co-curated by Da Corte and Meg Onli.
