About
A lecture on the history and architecture of the 1799 building that now houses the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum. Art historian J. Keith Doherty explores how the structure, ostensibly built as a barn on the former estate of Revolutionary War colonel William Stephens Smith, served as a showpiece displaying its owner's wealth and taste to those sailing past on the East River. He also discusses the history of villa building along the river, from Peter Stuyvesant's Bowery farmhouse to the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Gracie Mansion, and compares surviving buildings such as Philipse Manor Hall, the Van Cortlandt House Museum and the Valentine-Varian House. The talk marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Mount Vernon Hotel.
