About
A program at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden looking back at spies and spying in New York City from the American Revolution to the 1820s and 1830s. The museum's brand new program explores the spying and spying techniques of ordinary citizens, from George Washington's Culper Spies in the Revolutionary War to the War of 1812 and early 19th-century reform movements like temperance and abolition, which set the stage for spies of the Civil War. It is followed by a tour of the Mount Vernon Hotel, where from 1826 to 1833 guests might have gossiped about spies of their day—or been spies themselves—while pursuing leisure activities in the then-tranquil countryside of Manhattan. The museum marks 250 years of American Independence and 200 years of the Mount Vernon Hotel with this look at a hidden facet of New York City history.
