"Bowne Around Towne": tour of Flushing's Quaker past.
- John Bowne House
- $20
About
A guided walking tour of Flushing sites connected to the Bowne family, who were among the first European settlers of the area in the 1650s and lived in the same home for nine generations. It is organized by the John Bowne House, whose family members fought for religious freedom in the 1660s and later supported Quaker pacifism and the anti-slavery movement. The roughly one-mile route stops at places including the Bowne House, the Fox Oaks Stone, Flushing Town Hall, the Flushing Friends Meeting House, and the Weeping Beech Tree, showing where the family lived, worshipped, and worked. Visitors should bring comfortable walking shoes and a bottle of water, and the walk ends at Bowne House, now the only Queens site on the National Park Service's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
