Craig Handy and 2nd Line Smith
The Django, 6th Avenue 2, 10013 New York, Manhattan
About
A live jazz performance by Craig Handy and 2nd Line Smith at The Django, a cellar-level club in the Roxy Hotel on Avenue of the Americas in New York City. Saxophonist Craig Handy leads the project, joined by Matt Chertkoff on guitar, Kyle Koehler on organ, Kenny Bentley on sousaphone, and Donald Edward on drums. Handy began his career playing with jazz masters such as Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Abdullah Ibrahim, and the Mingus Dynasty Band, and was known by his late 20s for his technical mastery and post-bop talent, as well as for performing with vocalists like Betty Carter and Dee Dee Bridgewater. He has since toured with artists including Herbie Hancock, Cedar Walton, Wynton Marsalis, and The Cookers, and the project draws on New Orleans music and groove-filled re-imaginings of originals and standards by the late organist Jimmy Smith.
